In November 2022, an inspiring display of innovation and dedication, around fifty-five year 9 students from Bradford Girls’ Grammar School participated in a transformative ‘Big Ideas Day’.

The event, organised by Solutions for the Planet and sponsored by Bic, received additional support from local business Northern Gas Networks. The immersive programme empowered students to address sustainability challenges close to their hearts and develop impactful solutions.

The enthusiasm was profound, as all ten teams from Bradford Girls’ Grammar School eagerly embraced the opportunity to continue their journey.

Over the course of three months, these remarkable students invested their time and efforts in designing comprehensive presentations and business plans for their ideas.

Impressively, their hard work paid off as all ten teams confidently submitted their projects for the prestigious Big Ideas national competition. A panel of experts, carefully chosen by the programme, faced the challenging task of evaluating over 400 entries to select the top 12 teams for each regional final.

Bradford Girls’ Grammar School triumphed as six of their teams were shortlisted, earning them the privilege of presenting their remarkable ideas at Bradford University on 26 May.

On the day of the regional finals, the participating groups were joined by teams from Settle College and Dixons Kings Academy, intensifying the spirit of healthy competition. The student teams found themselves facing a distinguished panel of five judges, all esteemed industry experts.

With unwavering confidence, each team delivered their presentations in a grand auditorium, showcasing their creative solutions to both the judges and their fellow participants. The high-quality entries captivated the audience, leading the judges to describe the competition as the most fiercely competitive regional finals this year.

While the judges deliberated and made their decisions, the students enjoyed a guided tour of the university campus and shared a delightful lunch.
