Diwali Basket Brigade sets sights on feeding 5,000 families in charity drive across the UK

As the cost-of-living crisis continues to bite, the Diwali Basket Brigade is set to embark on its most ambitious charity drive yet, with the goal of distributing 5,000 food hampers to families in need across the UK.

In its seventh year, this volunteer-led initiative is expanding to four major cities – Birmingham, London, Manchester, and Leicester – bringing communities together to share the spirit of Diwali while tackling food insecurity head-on.

The Diwali Basket Brigade, run by The Diwali Foundation, is on a mission to support some of the UK’s most vulnerable households, regardless of faith or background.

Founded in 2018, the charity has already provided over 14,000 hampers, feeding more than 57,000 people. This year (2024), the charity aims to make an even greater impact by distributing 5,000 hampers, a significant increase from the 4,000 delivered last year.

With a dedicated team of volunteers, the Diwali Basket Brigade works closely with over 40 food banks and charities to ensure that these hampers reach those in greatest need. Each hamper is packed with essential food items, offering relief to families and individuals facing hunger during the festive season.

This year’s packing events will take place on Saturday, 26 October in Birmingham and London, and Sunday, 27 October in Manchester and Leicester. The aim is clear: to unite volunteers from all walks of life in a shared commitment to give back and bring some much-needed light to those facing hardship.

“Our goal has always been to do more each year,” says Deepak Parekh, founder of the Diwali Basket Brigade. “In 2024, we’re aiming higher than ever, and with the support of our volunteers and donors, I’m confident we’ll make a real difference.

“Diwali is about more than just celebration – it’s about community, kindness, and sharing hope with those who need it most. No one should have to go hungry, and through this initiative, we’re showing that we’re stronger together.”

The charity’s vision continues to grow alongside its impact, and with the support of communities across the UK, 2024 is set to be the most successful year yet for the Diwali Basket Brigade.

The Diwali Basket Brigade is calling on the public to get involved, whether through volunteering, donating, or simply spreading the word. Every contribution – big or small – makes a difference and helps bring relief to those struggling with food insecurity.
