The West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA) is calling on residents to shape the future of the region by sharing their views on its draft budget for the upcoming year. The engagement, launched on 23 December, aims to gather public input on how to drive growth, improve services, and manage priorities during challenging financial times.
With ambitious plans to boost the region’s economy and a shift to a single funding settlement from the government by 2026, this budget outlines how WYCA will deliver on Mayor Tracy Brabin’s key priorities. From expanding bus routes and supporting job training to enhancing cultural projects, the Authority wants to know what matters most to YOU.
On 12 December, local leaders discussed the pressures facing WYCA and its partners – from inflation to the need to maintain critical services like school bus routes and concessionary travel for under 19s and over 65s. Despite financial uncertainty, leaders are determined to keep projects moving across transport, skills, business, and regeneration.
However, tough decisions lie ahead. That’s why a public survey is now live – to give you a voice in how this money is spent and ensure that every penny reflects the needs of the community. Whether it’s getting better bus services or increasing opportunities for training and jobs, your input will shape the final budget.
Understanding the Budget:
WYCA’s funding is divided into two key areas:
- Revenue Funding – Supports day-to-day operations and projects that impact daily life.
- Capital Funding – Reserved for long-term infrastructure projects (with individual consultations set for 2025).
The current engagement focuses on revenue funding – directly affecting the services and programs you use regularly.
Mayor Tracy Brabin recently outlined her bold vision for the region through the Local Growth Plan. Her goals include creating a better-connected transport network, boosting local economies, and ensuring people have the skills needed to land high-paying jobs. This budget plays a vital role in turning that vision into reality.
“I’m on a growth mission for West Yorkshire – ensuring that everyone can succeed with more money in their pockets,” Mayor Brabin said. “But ambition comes with challenges, and it’s the people of West Yorkshire who feel the impact. That’s why it’s crucial to hear your views.
“I encourage everyone to take part in this engagement. Tell us what you want to see in our region so we can deliver a brighter future for all.”
