Newcastle upon Tyne tops UK for roadworks, study reveals significant infrastructure challenges

A new study reveals that Newcastle upon Tyne is the UK area with the most roadworks.

The study, conducted by personal injury experts, analysed data sourced from Gov.uk, National Highways, and the Office for National Statistics (ONS) on current and future roadworks across all unitary and local authorities in the UK.

The data, accurate as of 23 September 2024, includes current and planned future roadworks. By comparing the roadworks data to the total mileage of A and M roads within each local authority, the analysis determines the rate of roadworks per 100 miles of road, with areas ranked based on the highest to lowest rate.

Newcastle upon Tyne in Tyne and Wear comes in first place with 162.84 roadworks per 100 miles of road. This figure is based on 94 ongoing and planned roadworks scattered over 57.73 miles of A and M roads in the area.

Rotherham, located in South Yorkshire, comes second with 139.34 roadworks per 100 miles. Rotherham has 120 current and future roadworks distributed over 86.12 miles of A and M roads.

Warrington, Cheshire, follows in third place with 133.85 roadworks per 100 miles. With a total of 126 current and planned roadworks spread across 94.14 miles of A and M roads

Tameside, Greater Manchester, ranks fourth, with 129.37 roadworks per 100 miles of road. The borough has a total of 66 planned and active roadworks distributed over 51.01 miles of A and M roads.

Sefton, Merseyside, comes in fifth with 118.72 roadworks per 100 miles of road. The local authority has a total of 72 planned and active roadworks spread over 60.65 miles of A and M roads.

Kingston upon Hull, Gateshead, Leeds, Knowsley, and Blackburn with Darwen occupy positions six to ten with roadworks per 100 miles ranging from 117.28 to 110.99.

On the other side of the list, Monmouthshire is the local authority with the least roadwork per 100 miles, with only 1.81 roadworks.

Hounslow and Southampton are the second and third areas with the least roadworks, with 1.96 and 2.68 roadworks per 100 miles, respectively.

A spokesperson for Claims.co.uk commented on the findings, “The data provides a clear picture of roadworks density in some of the busiest regions in the UK. By looking at the number of current and future roadworks in relation to the total miles of A and M roads, the study offers valuable insight into areas with significant infrastructure investment.

“Local authorities like Newcastle, Rotherham, Warrington, Tameside, and Sefton show a higher concentration of roadworks, which may be essential for long-term road safety, traffic management, and economic growth. This kind of data is crucial for assessing the impact of roadworks on both daily commuters and regional businesses.”
