Police named woman killed in Batley road sweeper incident

West Yorkshire Police have formally named the woman who tragically died following a road traffic collision in Batley as Khatija Umarji, aged 77, from Batley.

The incident occurred at approximately 9:55am on Tuesday, 24 June, on Commercial Street, where emergency services responded to reports of a collision involving a road sweeper vehicle and a pedestrian. Despite their efforts, Mrs Umarji was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

A man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He has since been interviewed and released on police bail while further enquiries are carried out.

The Major Collision Enquiry Team at West Yorkshire Police is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Detective Sergeant Nina Roper of the Major Collision Enquiry Team said: “A woman has sadly lost her life, and an investigation is underway to determine exactly what happened.

We have already spoken to a number of witnesses at the scene but are appealing for anyone else who may have seen the collision or events leading up to it to come forward.

Motorists who were in the area at the time are also asked to check any dashcam footage that might assist the investigation.”

Police are also urging members of the public not to share any video footage of the collision or surrounding events on social media, out of respect for Mrs Umarji’s family. Any such material should instead be submitted directly to the police.

Anyone with information or relevant footage is asked to contact the Major Collision Enquiry Team via West Yorkshire Police live chat or by calling 101, quoting log number 509 of 24 June.
