Huddersfield police station project progresses after parking layout amended

Plans for Huddersfield’s new police station have moved a step closer after Kirklees Council approved minor amendments to the development, with West Yorkshire Police insisting the changes will have no impact on how the station operates.

West Yorkshire Police (WYP) opened its new district headquarters on Halifax Road in Dewsbury earlier this month after determining that the former headquarters in Huddersfield was no longer fit for purpose and had become uneconomical to maintain.

A separate station at Northgate in Huddersfield is planned to operate as a satellite base and is expected to open in autumn 2026.

The new facility will replace the former Nissan and Fiat dealership on Broadway with a two-storey, L-shaped police station.

When the application was first submitted in August 2025, West Yorkshire Police said the station would accommodate all Huddersfield policing teams currently based at Castlegate, allowing officers to remain within the communities they serve.

The building will also include a public help desk for residents.

The latest planning documents show a revised car park layout, reducing the number of parking spaces from 96 to 94 to make room for additional electric vehicle charging points.

According to a letter submitted by the force’s planning agent, Avison Young, the original parking provision exceeded operational requirements. The letter stated that peak demand would require 89 spaces, meaning the revised layout would still provide sufficient capacity. It added: “A reduction of two standard parking spaces should not have a detrimental effect on the development or its ability to function efficiently and safely.”

The revised plans do not alter vehicle access or traffic flow within the site.

Kirklees Council approved the amendments on 23 July, with construction remaining on course to meet its planned completion date in 2026.
