‘Best shop in the world’ could have new homes built above it

A Batley grocery store hailed by one customer as the “best shop in the world” could soon have five new homes built above it.

Plans have been submitted to Kirklees Council seeking permission to create five maisonettes above A & Z Dadipatel Food Store in Batley.

The application, submitted by A Dadipatel on 18 August, proposes five one-bedroom properties above the popular grocery store.

A & Z Dadipatel has become a firm favourite with shoppers, offering everything from fresh fruit and vegetables to dairy products, baked goods, spices, everyday groceries and a butcher’s counter.

And judging by its online reviews, some customers believe the Batley shop can compete with anywhere in the world.

Google reviewer Ahmed Lo described it as the “best in the city” for groceries, while Danny Diez went even further, declaring A & Z Dadipatel the “best shop in the world”.

Another customer, Abdullah Ibn Usman, praised the huge variety available under one roof.

He wrote: “A superb range of different ingredients. An extensive and exciting range of different spices, vegetables and fruits. Clean quality butchers. All necessities available here.”

Now the premises could be set for another chapter, with proposals to introduce residential accommodation above the store.

Details contained within the initial application remain limited, although the applicant states that all building materials for the development would be purchased locally.

Plans also indicate additional skylights would be installed as part of the development.

No additional parking provision has been included in the application at this stage.

The proposals will now go through Kirklees Council’s planning process, with residents and interested parties able to submit comments before the consultation period closes on Tuesday, 8 September.

Planning officers will then consider the proposals before a decision is made.
