The butcher and bakery at a Huddersfield supermarket have been allowed to reopen after an “imminent risk to health” was rectified.
Kirklees Council had ordered the two departments at the Umrah Supermarket at Trinity Street in Huddersfield town centre to close following a routine Food Hygiene Inspection. The inspection on October 9, 2026, found a “cockroach infestation” which was described as an “imminent risk to health”, in a notice from the inspector.
On Tuesday 13 October, a spokesperson for the supermarket told the Local Democracy Reporting Service that the closure had only been for one day, with both elements now back up and running. A council spokesperson confirmed that the supermarket has fully reopened and said that officers will continue to work closely with the business and carry out regular checks.
In an statement on Monday 12 October, Kirklees Council said: “Before the premises can reopen, the business owner must appoint a professional pest control service, undertake a deep clean of the premises, and address any structural issues that may be contributing to the infestation.
“Officers will continue to work with the business owner and advise them through the process to make sure the supermarket is safe for the public before reopening.”
