New pedestrian and cycle crossing plan approved

Work to create a new crossing across Wakefield Road, and fill in an existing pedestrian underpass, has been approved.

Members of the Bradford East Area Committee gave the green light to the £400,000 scheme, near Rhine Street, at a meeting on Thursday evening.

There had been two objections to the plans – claims that the work was a waste of money, and that a pedestrian crossing would inconvenience motorists.

The scheme will be paid for through the City Regional Sustainable Transport Settlement – a multi-million pound fund awarded to West Yorkshire by Government for transport improvements including work to make it easier to walk and cycle.

Highways officers said the underpass had a “high ongoing maintenance cost due to constant vandalism, drainage issues, damage to the internal lights, graffiti and frequent cost of accident damage repairs to the walls adjacent to the main carriageway.”

Neither of the objectors attended the meeting on Thursday.

Highways Officer Andrew Smith told members that if the cost of the project did rise, the extra funds would come from the Combined Authority pot, rather than be siphoned away from other traffic budgets.

Councillor Rizwana Jamil (Lab, Bowling and Barkerend) said: “A lot of my constituents tell me these subways are not really nice for them to walk through.”
