Bradford schools gear up for thrilling Greenpower Kit Car Challenge

School pupils across Bradford are revving up for an electrifying experience as they prepare to design, build, and race battery-powered kit cars in the 2025 Bradford College Greenpower Challenge.

In partnership with the Greenpower Education Trust, this annual initiative sparks interest in engineering careers while inspiring students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths (STEM) through the excitement of motorsport. The challenge culminates in an epic race day at Tockwith Race Circuit in North Yorkshire this July, where schools will compete to dethrone reigning champions, BBG Academy.

Participating schools, including newcomers like Buttershaw Business & Enterprise College

and Swain House Primary School, have already received their car kits, generously donated by Bradford College. Teams will now work under the guidance of teachers and experts to build 30mph single-seater electric cars, crafting unique designs with a focus on eco-friendly materials.

This year brings exciting new twists, including a collaboration between Hanson Academy and Swain House Primary School, where Year 6 students will build a smaller ‘Goblin’ car aimed at younger racers.

“This Formula 24 Challenge is about more than just engineering—it’s about building confidence, teamwork, and valuable skills like marketing and fundraising,” said a representative from Greenpower Education Trust. “It’s also a chance to showcase STEM careers to students from diverse backgrounds who may not otherwise have this kind of hands-on opportunity.”

Last year’s winners BBG Academy

Last year’s winners, BBG Academy, are ready to defend their title, saying: “We’re thrilled to be involved again! Last year taught our students resilience, teamwork, and the value of perseverance. Our new team is excited to hit the track!”

Newcomers like One In A Million Free School are equally enthusiastic. “This is a brilliant opportunity for our students to gain hands-on STEM experience and work together as a team. They can’t wait to get started!”

The Bradford College Greenpower Challenge exemplifies the power of education and innovation to inspire future engineers, while celebrating the teamwork, creativity, and determination of local students.
