Amber cold weather alert issued for Bradford as temperatures expected to drop to -11°C

Bradford is bracing for extreme cold as an Amber Cold Weather Alert remains in place across the district, with temperatures expected to plummet to -11°C this week. The alert, issued by the UK Health Security Agency in partnership with the Met Office, covers the whole of England and will last until 12pm on Sunday, 12 January.

In response, Bradford Council says it has intensified efforts to clear snow and ice, with gritting crews out in force since 5am. Priority One Routes and key pavements in towns and the city centre have been gritted, with further rounds planned throughout the day and evening. Crews will also return at 5am tomorrow to grit major routes once again.

A Bradford Council spokesperson, said: “It’s been a difficult few days across the country. Our staff have been working hard to try and keep the district moving and protect our vulnerable residents.

“This period of cold weather is expected to continue throughout the week with periods of further snow and rain forecast combined with extremely cold overnight temperatures.

“Our staff will continue to be out in all weathers working hard to try to keep the district moving and protect vulnerable people.

“We’d like to thank everyone across the district who is continuing to do all they can to help their community by looking out for vulnerable neighbours, family and friends.”

Community Support and Safety Measures

  • Cold Weather Provision is open, and outreach workers are on the ground to assist rough sleepers. Concerned residents can use Street Link to connect vulnerable individuals to services.
  • Household waste collection is suspended today (Tuesday 7 January) and tomorrow due to unsafe conditions. Residents are asked to leave bins out for collection when it becomes safe. Additional waste in tied black bags will be collected alongside bins.
  • Major Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRC) at Bowling Back Lane (Bradford) and Royd Ings Avenue (Keighley) are open, while others remain closed for safety reasons but are expected to reopen tomorrow.

Council’s Efforts to Tackle the Cold Snap

All available operational staff have been redeployed to assist with gritting, snow clearing, and replenishing grit bins across the district. Council 4×4 vehicles are also being used to support essential services, including home care visits and bereavement services.
