Approval granted to transform historic Rawson hotel into exquisite restaurant

Plans to turn part of a historic Bradford- city centre hotel into a restaurant have been approved.

The Rawson Hotel on John Street dates back to the late nineteenth century, and was designed by architects Lockwood and Mawson.

Upper floors of the Grade II listed building are currently used as flats, and the former pub space on the ground floor is used as a meeting space for the International Christian Movement.

Earlier this year a planning application to convert this ground floor space into a restaurant and take away was submitted by Mohammed Ummar.

His application said he currently has a business at Oastler Market, which is due to shut down once Darley Street Market opens next year.

It says the move to this unit would provide “an alternative site for the existing business that has been trading for many years.”

Approving the development, planning officers said: “The proposal is considered to introduce an appropriate use within the primary shopping area of Bradford City Centre.

“The proposal will not harm the character and appearance of the City Centre conservation area and will preserve the significance of the designated heritage asset.”

In recent years the ground floor of the building has been used as an Italian café, a hairdressers and a foot clinic.
