Children’s Cancer North ‘Children’s Cancer Run’ celebrates 40th anniversary in 2023

Children’s Cancer Run organised by Children’s Cancer North at Newcastle Racecourse will celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2023.

The 40th edition of the UK’s biggest single charity fun run will take place on Sunday 14 May 2023. Entry for the run, which regularly attracts more than 10,000 runners and spectators, will open on Monday 05 December.

To mark 40 years of the charity run, Children’s Cancer North is bringing a festival feel to next year’s Children’s Cancer Run. Runners and spectators can expect live entertainment, arts and cultural activities, local food stalls, and the chance to learn more about the charity’s work supporting individuals and families affected by childhood cancer at a special interactive Kids Lab Zone.

Chris Peacock, Chair of Children’s Cancer North, said: “From its humble beginnings at Kings School in Tynemouth four decades ago, the Children’s Cancer Run has grown to become one of our region’s most iconic events.

“Every year, thousands of runners join us to raise money for Children’s Cancer North and support our work to make life better for children with cancer.

“The event has raised millions of pounds for our charity and we want next year’s run to be the biggest and best yet. Anyone can take part in the Children’s Cancer Run; you don’t have to run as a family. We’d love to see people of all ages and all abilities join us at Newcastle Racecourse to mark this special anniversary.

“We’ve opened entries early this year for people that want to give the gift of a charity donation this Christmas.”

Early bird entry to the Children’s Cancer Run costs £7 per child and £14 per adult, with special family rates enabling a 3rd child to go free. All sponsorship money raised from the event goes into funding revolutionary cancer research, providing support for children and their families, and raising awareness of childhood cancer.

Over the course of its 39-year history, the Children’s Cancer Run has raised over £7.5m for childhood cancer research.

Chris continued: “Because we’re marking a special anniversary in 2023, we’re inviting people to share their memories and experiences of the Children’s Cancer Run through the years.

“There may be people out there that ran the very first Children’s Cancer Run back in the early 1980s, or people that ran the event as a child and now run with their own children. We’d love to hear people’s stories and celebrate all the amazing individuals that make this event so special.

“As a survivor of childhood cancer, I know first hand what a difference Children’s Cancer North makes to the lives of people affected by this disease. That’s why the Children’s Cancer Run is such an important event, and why we’re celebrating its amazing legacy in 2023.”
