Council committee to address building control issues after sewage incident complaint.

A committee will be told what changes have been made in a Council department following an incident where a homeowner experienced sewage rising into their home.

The Local Government Ombudsman recently published the findings of a complaint against Bradford Council made by a Bradford homeowner.

The investigation found that building control checks at a recently built property were not properly carried out by Council officers.

It later emerged the house was not properly connected to the sewer, and after the new owner began using the facilities, human waste began backing up the drains.

The Council apologised for the blunder and agreed to review its practices after a report into the incident was published.

On Tuesday members of the Council’s Regeneration and Environment Scrutiny Committee will discuss the findings of the Ombudsman, and receive an update on what is being done to improve the Council’s building control measures.

A report to members says the Council has: “Reviewed its practice, procedures, record keeping and use of document management systems to avoid problems identified in this report occurring again.

“The measures are to be applied to all applications for construction developments received by Building Control Services and, as such, will benefit all residents of Bradford district.”
