Huge digital sign refused

Plans to install a huge digital sign on a high-rise Bradford building would be an “overly dominant feature” on the city’s skyline, according to planners.

Proposals to install four large digital advertising signs on Wardley House in Bradford city centre were submitted by Firas Al Fadhili earlier this year.

The signs would be the first step in a major redevelopment of the site, which is next to the National Science and Media Museum.

Planners have now approved two of the signs, but refused the other two.

The two approved signs would face out onto Little Horton Lane and Sharp Street.

Another sign would face out onto the junction of Little Horton Lane and Chester Street. Highways officers raised concerns about these plans, saying it “would affect driver sight lines on the approach to the traffic signals and pedestrian crossing point, for vehicles travelling east on Chester Street, raising pedestrian and highway safety concerns”.

These concerns led to this sign being refused.

Referring to the other refused sign, which faces away from the city centre down Little Horton Lane, officers said: “It would be positioned on the 8th storey of the building, 29m above street level and measure 11m x 13 m in size.

“At this position and size it is considered to represent an overly dominant feature that would result in an inappropriate addition to the building, having an adverse impact on the visual amenity of the area.”
