Students of the Madrassah at Jamia Masjid Hanfia mosque in Manningham, Bradford, took part in a pre-Ramadan clean up this week. The boys were led by their teacher Molana Kamran who taught them the significance of the ritual; cleaning and dusting community mosques to welcome the holy month.
The month of Ramadan is seen as a special time for renewing bonds with Allah (God) as well as promoting the spirit of close cooperation in the community. Jamia Masjid Hanfia is committed to providing Islamic education to young children and as part of this, its students have been taking part in numerous community-minded activities over the past few weeks to support their studies.
Jamia Masjid Hanfia is also making sure that children and families in Madrassah are learning about healthy diet, by offering healthy diet workshops in partnership with Faith in Commune; an organisation which provides health initiatives for children in Madrassah and other religious places in Bradford – and ‘My Living Well’ who help people in Bradford district, Keighley & Craven improve their health and wellbeing.
This has been part of the ongoing Living Well Faith Settings programme, which encourages children and families in Manningham to develop healthy dietary habits in their daily lives, with the help of trainers and community engagement staff who implement the programme. The Madrassah has been working hard in promoting healthy lifestyles as part of this and are setting a good example for their students, who also enjoyed a group walk to Ilkley Moors recently as part of the health initiative.
Cleaning religious centres and mosques often begins around 10 days prior to Ramadan. Community members pitch in washing rugs, sweeping floors and cleaning walls to prepare their scared place.
