New school could bring vital Special Needs support to the community

Permission sought to convert building

A new school could help a growing number of children in need of extra help with their education.

Independent provider Strive for Education has applied to convert a Grade II-listed building in Headingley.

Youngsters with Educational Healthcare Plans (EHCPs) would be educated at the site from September this year.

The company is seeking change-of-use planning permission from Leeds City Council for the building on North Hill Road.

A planning report said: “The applicants wish to open an additional site in Headingley from September 2025 to enable them to take on more Leeds authority pupils.

“They have a waiting list of local young people who require education and whose needs cannot be met in the local area.”

The report said some pupils were having to be taken to existing schools in Harrogate by taxi due to a shortage of places.

The new school would have around ten staff, along with four classes of up to six pupils.

The report said the proposed Headingley site had a large car park where cars and minibuses could drop pupils off.

It said: “The proposed school also operates a shorter day than most schools with the majority of pupils arriving at approximately 9:30am and leaving at around 2:30pm.

“These times will ensure that traffic congestion is minimised as these are less busy times for the local community.”

Youngsters are referred to Strive for Education by North Yorkshire and Leeds councils.
