A world buffet could be coming to a former Huddersfield town centre supermarket as new plans are revealed.
The application from ‘Home Huddersfield Ltd’ relates to the old Farmfoods at Market Street in the centre of town which permanently closed in September 2023. It seeks permission to change the use of the building to a restaurant and takeaway, and install a shopfront and ventilation system.
An artist’s impression shows how the front of the building could look, with a sign reading “Home world buffet”. Kirklees Council is expected to make a decision on the plans by 4 December.

The supporting Conservation and Heritage Statement highlights that the site sits within the Huddersfield Town Centre Conservation Area meaning that extra consideration is given to ensure historic and architectural elements are protected. The plans do not involve any structural changes to the building and include things like the replacement of aluminium framed windows and doors.
The large aluminium shopfronts associated with the building’s former use would be replaced with “large picture windows”. Entrance doors will also be fully glazed with toughened glass so as to provide a “modern light filled dining environment”, the statement adds. The site will also come with 12 car parking spaces.
Huddersfield is currently undergoing big changes, with its food offering soon set to increase in other parts of the town centre. Over at the Piazza, work on the first phase of the multi-million-pound Our Cultural Heart is well underway and will see the opening of a new food court in summer 2026.
A new food court in the shape of the Rate My Takeaway Kitchen was opened in the Packhorse Centre last September and continues to house a variety of takeaways. Over on King Street, Chopstix Noodle Bar opened in July, and Taco Bell will be setting up shop in The Light at the Kingsgate Centre.
