Updated plans have been submitted for two historic buildings next to Dewsbury Arcade as work continues on one of the town’s biggest regeneration projects.
Kirklees Council purchased the neighbouring properties at 18-20 Corporation Street and 17 Foundry Street as part of wider efforts to restore and revitalise the historic arcade and surrounding town centre.
The buildings form a key part of the redevelopment plans, with proposals including a new accessible entrance, staircase and lift core designed to improve access throughout the site.
The lift core is particularly significant because it would connect the upper floors of both buildings and the adjoining Dewsbury Arcade, allowing visitors to move seamlessly between the properties.
Original plans were approved following the council’s acquisition of the buildings in 2022. However, revised proposals have now been submitted through a Variation of Condition application, seeking permission to amend previously approved designs.
Such applications are commonly used when architects, engineers or project teams identify more practical, efficient or structurally suitable solutions during the development process. The latest applications were submitted on June 30 and will now be considered through the usual planning process, including public consultation and assessment by heritage officers.
The proposals form part of the wider Dewsbury Arcade refurbishment scheme, which is supported by a ÂŁ4.5 million grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
Once completed, the arcade is expected to reopen as the UK’s first community run shopping centre, providing retail, cultural and community space in the heart of Dewsbury.
