Huddersfield town centre regeneration efforts continue with new planters

Efforts to revitalise Huddersfield town centre are continuing, with new planters being installed on the high street. This work aims to make the area more attractive for residents, visitors and businesses.

The latest additions have been funded through the Welcome Back Fund, a programme introduced to encourage people back to town centres following the Covid-19 pandemic.

The planters are the newest visible sign of ongoing regeneration work being carried out by Huddersfield BID, which works alongside Kirklees Council on projects aimed at improving the town centre environment.

Originally established in 2019, Huddersfield BID is currently serving its second five year term after businesses voted to renew the organisation’s mandate in February 2024. The BID delivers a range of services designed to complement those provided by the council, including pressure washing, graffiti removal, town centre patrols and the organisation of major events.

Although the latest planters are not yet complete, shoppers and visitors said they welcomed the continued investment in the town centre.

Among them was 63 year old Amarjit Basi, who said it was encouraging to see efforts being made to improve the town centre.

“I live in Cornwall and we have poor high streets. They are not as loved and looked after as Huddersfield. On a glorious morning, teams going out to care for the place is wonderful to see. “I think it’s brilliant, not only to see restoration, but how sensitively it is approached.”

Huddersfield resident Sheila also welcomed the improvements, saying they helped create a greater sense of pride in the town. “We need to be brightening the place up,” she said.

“It’s worth it to be proud of our town.”

Huddersfield BID chief executive Sam Sharp said the organisation remained committed to improving the town centre experience for businesses, residents and visitors. He said: “We will strive to engage with businesses and town centre visitors alike, to promote Huddersfield as a place to visit, work and live and overall enjoy in a safe and inviting environment.

“We will promote businesses, events, activities and services through our new town centre digital hub, the Hello Huddersfield App, and deliver on our promises to increase footfall into the town centre through our key events.”

The BID says improving the appearance of the town centre remains a key part of its long term vision for Huddersfield, alongside supporting businesses and encouraging more people to spend time in the town centre.
