The MP for Spen Valley says she is continuing to work with Kirklees Council and the owner of a Cleckheaton wedding venue after residents complained about late-night noise, fireworks and traffic disruption.
Kim Leadbeater said she had again contacted the owners of The Monal by Jalwa after receiving further complaints from local people, adding that concerns could not be resolved “via Facebook” and urging residents to report incidents directly to the council.
The venue, on Bradford Road in Cleckheaton, hosts weddings and events for up to 400 guests, according to its website.
Residents living nearby say celebrations have led to late-night fireworks, loud vehicles and parking problems. David Craven, 71, who lives next to the venue, said the disruption had become increasingly difficult to live with.
“They park on the roadside on both sides. When it is on, they block the emergency services. It goes until midnight, the noise – it’s ridiculous.”
Mr Craven also claimed fireworks and high-performance cars regularly disturbed residents late into the evening.
The issue was first raised publicly in May, when Ms Leadbeater said she had been contacted by a resident concerned about noise from the venue. Following discussions with the owners, she said they had agreed they did not want to cause disruption to neighbours or the wider community.
However, in a social media update this week, the Labour MP said she had continued to receive complaints and had once again contacted the venue’s management. She wrote: “Regarding noise from fireworks and high-performance cars at The Monal wedding venue in Cleckheaton, as with any concerns of this nature, all incidents must be reported to Kirklees Council. Following my previous communication with the owner of the establishment, the council and the police, and subsequent visit to the premises, I have contacted the owner again, expressing concerns raised by local residents, as I did previously; I am currently waiting for a response.”
Kirklees Council and The Monal by Jalwa were approached for comment. Neither had responded by the time of publication.
