Mayor asks West Yorkshire women to take part in safety roundtable

Increasing safety for women and girls across West Yorkshire is one of Mayor Tracy Brabin's pledges for improving the area.

Communities and partnership organisations across West Yorkshire are being encouraged to share their experience and knowledge to help improve safety for women and girls.

The Mayor of West Yorkshire, Tracy Brabin, has recently launched a call for evidence on the theme, which will help to shape her forthcoming Police and Crime Plan.

Under the Police Reform and Social Responsibility Act 2011 the Mayor must produce a Police and Crime Plan that sets out West Yorkshire’s strategic policing and crime priorities and how she plans to meet them.

The plan draws on a wide range of information, from consultation with local people, the police, community safety, criminal justice and third sector partners to ensure it reflects the policing and crime issues which are affecting West Yorkshire.

Formal consultation on the plan set for early September, alongside a round-table event, focused on safety for women and girls.

The roundtable event will take place virtually between 2:30 pm -4:30 pm on Tuesday 7 September.

Mayor of West Yorkshire, Tracy Brabin says that she wants to capture a diverse range of perspectives. She said: “The safety of women and girls is of great concern to me and a key pledge at the very heart of my Mayoral manifesto.

That is why I have arranged for a roundtable event on 7 September, to hear more about people’s experiences and understand how we can work better together. We know this is a complex subject and there is much to be done at a national level, but we also need a local conversation now to gather our combined knowledge.

“I am really keen to hear from local voices on key issues such as stalking, domestic abuse, sexual offences, honour-based abuse, misogyny, modern slavery and safety in public spaces.

“I want to know how we can bring about the behavioural change, which will influence attitudes towards women and girls in wider society.”

Deputy Mayor Alison Lowe.

West Yorkshire’s Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, Alison Lowe added: “Our conversation will be crucial in informing the Police and Crime Plan 2021-2024, which is a key document and will drive policing and partnership efforts to support women and girls over the next 3 years.

“The vision for our work is to come together with partners including the police, local authorities, health, education, third sector, our communities and those supporting and advocating for women and girls across all sectors.”

The Police and Crime Plan reflects the views and priorities of local people and local partners and aims to make sure that all of our communities across West Yorkshire are safe and feel safe. These priorities have been identified through consultation with the general public, partners and West Yorkshire Police.

A ‘Tackling Domestic Abuse’ conference involving the third sector is due to take place on 16 November which will be an in-person and virtual event, with further details to be announced soon.
