Lord Mayor of Bradford to meet with Baroness Gohir OBE

The Lord Mayor of Bradford Councillor Martin Love will be meeting with Baroness Gohir OBE at Bradford City Hall today to congratulate her on her appointment to the House of Lords as a non-party-political peer.

Shaista Gohir who is the CEO of Muslim Women’s Network UK (MWNUK) was made a baroness because of her expertise on women’s rights and equality.

Shaista from Birmingham, who is of Pakistani heritage, has worked in the charity sector for nearly twenty years and is a leading women’s rights campaigner, recognised as one of the most influential Muslim women in Britain.

In addition to her work at MWNUK, she has served on various national and international advisory groups and boards. She is currently a Non-Executive Director at the University Hospital North Midlands NHS Trust and the Women’s Voices Lead at the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, an honorary role with responsibility for ensuring women’s views and experiences of maternity and gynaecology services are heard. Her passion for social justice led her to also founding a new charity last year, the Nisa Global Foundation, which will help women and girls in developing countries.

She will be presented with a bouquet of flowers at the short meeting which will also be attended by Bradford Council leader Councillor Susan Hinchcliffe, Councillor Fozia Shaheen, Councillor Sabiya Khan, Councillor Julie Humphreys, Fozia Uddin Partnership Relations Manager at University of Bolton, Rubina Burhan The Girlington Community Centre manager, Fiz Ahmed QPM Retired Police Officer, Michelle Khan a community and women’s rights activist, Humma Nizami Executive Director of Race Equality Network, Sergeant Jas Rayatt (Bradford South) and Jess Midgley Director of Khadijah Combat Academy.

The Lord Mayor of Bradford Councillor Martin Love, said: “It will be a real honour to meet Baroness Gohir and hear about her life and the ground-breaking work in which she is involved.”
