West Yorkshire Police’s Stronger Communities Team join Bradford’s Ashura march on Muharram

On Friday, 28 July, Bradford saw thousands from the Muslim community march down the streets as a part of ‘Ashura Parade’ organised by Hussainia Islamic Mission centre, Bradford. Among those in attendance, were West Yorkshire Police’s Stronger Communities Team.

The Ashura Parade holds immense significance during the Islamic month of Muharram.

Commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the beloved grandson of Prophet Muhammad, this solemn event symbolizes the struggle for justice and righteousness.

It serves as a powerful reminder of sacrifice, unity, and the rejection of oppression. The procession draws millions of Muslims worldwide, fostering a sense of community and spiritual reflection. The participants engage in prayers, recitations, and acts of charity, promoting compassion and empathy. Through this deeply cherished tradition, the Ashura Parade reinforces the values of faith, resilience, and the timeless lessons of standing up against injustice.

Ashura falls on the 10th day of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, and is observed by both Sunni and Shia Muslims.

For Shia Muslims, Ashura holds deep mourning as it marks the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussein, the revered grandson of the Holy Prophet, which occurred in 680 AD at Karbala in present-day Iraq.

The Hussainia Islamic Mission centre, Bradford organised this parade around the Great Horton Road area of the city.
