A group of new Level 2 Electrical Installation students from Bradford College had a special guided tour of the transformation work which is taking place in Bradford city centre as part of their studies.
The students were guided around the site by Hasanain Junaid, a Site Engineer from Balfour Beatty, who is Bradford Council’s construction partner on the Transforming Cities Fund project. Simon from Altitude Services Limited, who are working on the lighting elements of the project, also took part in the tour.
The visit provided the students with the opportunity to find out first-hand about the technical aspects of the electrical elements of the improvement work which is taking place to reshape the city centre.
The scheme is creating more green and public spaces to make it much easier, safer and more pleasant for people to spend time and get around the city centre on foot or by bike.
The students learned about the electrical work including the illuminated street signage, new access bollards and the processes involved in the work. They also learned about the risks and hazards that need to be considered in projects of this nature, as well as the health and safety procedures including PPE that need to be followed on this type of large-scale construction project.
The visit is part of an exciting new partnership between Balfour Beatty and Bradford College who are currently collaborating with the T-Level Design, Surveying and Planning group and the new cohort of Level 2 Electrical Installation students with site visits organised by Olivia McCormack.
“The tour was excellent and provided the students with in-depth knowledge about construction projects on this scale,” said Olivia McCormack, Work Experience Officer – Construction & Engineering at Bradford College. “Hasanain and Simon shared their expertise of all the work that has taken place so far and what is still to come.
“It was fascinating to hear all of the factors that have to be considered to complete a job of this scale including drainage and finding existing infrastructure such as the old tram tracks. We’re delighted to be part of this new partnership with Balfour Beatty and we are building on a continuous working relationship which involves lots of students across Construction and Engineering.”
Councillor Alex Ross-Shaw, Bradford Council’s Executive Member for Regeneration, Planning and Transport said: “The work taking place in the city centre is progressing well and will help drive the city centre forward for years to come, so it’s great that our young construction engineers of the future have been able to learn from this project as part of their studies.”
