BEAP wins Mind Wellbeing Award for transformative work in Bradford’s mental health through sport

BEAP Community Partnership won the Sporting Equals Mind Wellbeing Award at this year’s Sporting Equals Awards.

This award recognises BEAP’s significant work in using physical activity to support mental health and wellbeing, particularly within ethnically diverse communities in Bradford.

The glittering ceremony, which saw sporting legends like Linford Christie receive the Lifetime Achievement Award and Frank Bruno honoured for his incredible contributions to sport, was a night to remember. BEAP’s work was highlighted as a shining example of how grassroots organisations can make a lasting impact by addressing key health and wellbeing challenges in underserved communities.

Hiron Miah, Chair of BEAP Community Partnership, expressed his excitement after winning the award, “We are absolutely delighted and deeply honoured to win this award.

“It’s a true testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff, volunteers, and service users who have all played a part in this achievement. We know how crucial mental wellbeing is, especially in communities like ours where people face both cultural and socio-economic challenges. This award encourages us to continue our work and keep driving positive change in Bradford.”

Shahidur Rahman, Executive Director of BEAP Community Partnership, added, “This award means so much to us because it recognises the vital role that sports can play in enhancing mental health and wellbeing.

“Our projects like Men Reaching Out and the Women’s Network are designed to offer more than just physical activity, they provide a safe, supportive environment for people to rebuild their confidence and improve their mental health.

“We’d like to dedicate this award to the entire BEAP team and the Bradford community, who have believed in us, voted for us and supported our mission every step of the way.”

Lukman Miah, BEAP Centre and Programmes Manager, reflected on the impact the award would have, “Winning the Mind Wellbeing Award highlights how sport can truly change lives.

“The sessions we run – from football to badminton – help our participants not only stay active but also work through mental health challenges in a culturally sensitive setting.

“The recognition we received will only strengthen our resolve to expand our services and reach even more people in the community. This award is for all of us, and we hope it inspires others to join in and make a difference.”

The Sporting Equals Awards celebrate organisations and individuals across the UK who are working tirelessly to promote diversity and inclusion through sport. This year’s ceremony was especially memorable with icons like Linford Christie and Frank Bruno sharing their journeys and achievements.
