For half a century, Mohammad Shafaq has been a constant presence on the night shift at an East London soft drinks factory, dedicating his working life to keeping production running smoothly.
This week, his 50 years of service were honoured in a special celebration attended by friends, family, colleagues, and local MP James Asser.

Shafaq began his career in 1975, when the factory was still known as R White Rawlings, working as a Production Operative on double-day shifts. In 1977, he moved to night shifts, where he has spent the majority of his career. Over the decades, he has taken on a variety of roles, from Night Shift Chargehand and Lubrication Operator to Specialist Trainer and Team Coordinator, adapting to industry changes and technological advancements along the way.
Reflecting on his journey, Shafaq said: “I started working here in February 1975, and back then, it wasn’t Britvic—it was R White Rawlings. I spent my first two years on the double-day shift before moving to nights in 1977. Now, 50 years later, I’m still here.”
“The reason I have stayed so long is simple – the people. My colleagues and team leaders have made this workplace feel like home. It has been an amazing journey, and I truly appreciate everyone coming together to celebrate this milestone with me.”
His commitment to the job runs in the family—his brother, Mohammad Ikhlaq, has also dedicated 35 years to the same factory, making their combined service an incredible 85 years.
Shafaq’s long service was recognised in a ceremony at the Beckton factory, attended by his

friends, family, and colleagues. Local MP James Asser joined company representatives, including VP Production Nigel Paine and CEO Paul Davies, to pay tribute to his unwavering commitment.
Described as a problem solver, mentor, and valued colleague, Shafaq has not only witnessed major changes in manufacturing and technology but has also helped train and support generations of workers.
The Beckton site, where Shafaq has spent his career, now operates six production lines, producing popular drinks such as Tango, 7UP, Pepsi MAX, and Robinsons. But beyond the machines and production targets, Shafaq’s story is one of loyalty, resilience, and a quiet dedication to his work and colleagues.
In an era where long service is becoming increasingly rare, his 50-year milestone stands as a testament to the value of commitment and a strong work ethic, a legacy that will be remembered long after his final shift.
