Bradford to welcome Ugandan High Commissioner to foster stronger partnerships for a prosperous future

Over half a century after more than 27,000 Ugandan Asians arrived on British shores in 1972, expelled under the brutal regime of Idi Amin, the story of their resilience, enterprise and quiet transformation of towns like Bradford continues to unfold in powerful ways.
Now, in a landmark event at the city’s historic Midland Hotel on Monday 28 April, the next chapter in that story is set to be written.
In partnership with Her Excellency Nimisha J Madhvani, High Commissioner of Uganda to the UK, Bradford will host a unique gathering of civic and business leaders, creating a platform to explore new frontiers in trade, entrepreneurship, and cultural exchange between Bradford and Uganda.
The visit marks the first event of its kind, offering fresh energy to a city that continues to evolve, and providing a vital stage for young people, businesses and investors to forge meaningful international links.
Ugandan Asians, who once arrived in the UK with little more than uncertainty in their pockets, are today woven into the fabric of Bradford. Figures such as Dr Manoj Joshi have made significant contributions to the city’s educational, business and civic life, helping to shape the identity of modern Bradford—diverse, dynamic and forward-looking.
This event not only honours that legacy but seeks to build on it. As Bradford prepares to take centre stage as the UK City of Culture in 2025, the timing could not be more pertinent.
The Midland Hotel gathering promises to spark conversations about investment opportunities, business collaboration, and shared innovation between Uganda and Bradford. But beyond trade, it will spotlight something deeper—the shared values of resilience, community, and growth that link Uganda and Bradford’s stories.
Speaking ahead of the event, organisers stressed the importance of engaging Bradford’s youth. “This is about inspiring the next generation,” Dr Manoj Joshi MBE DL highlighted.
“We want young people to see that global partnerships aren’t abstract—they start with dialogue, shared interests, and the belief that the future is something we shape together.”
Adding to this Ambassador Nimisha Madhvani said: “Uganda is a safe investment and tourism destination with gorgeous 24’-30’ degree temperatures all year around with no humidity.”
Her Excellency further added that “Uganda Airlines will commence direct flights from London Gatwick to Entebbe 4 times a week from 18 May 2025” with “visas issued within 3 working days as long as all the relevant documents are correctly submitted”
The Ugandan High Commissioner to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and Ambassador to Ireland, concluded by saying:
“Uganda looks for forward to welcoming you”
With dignitaries, business leaders and civic figures expected to attend, the event reflects a bold ambition—not only to reflect on the past but to reimagine the future. A future where Bradford, a city shaped by migration and industry, positions itself as a key player in global enterprise and cultural exchange.
As the city opens its doors to Her Excellency and her delegation, it also opens up new possibilities for the future—ones rooted in shared history but focused firmly on what comes next.
