Has Hamza Choudhury’s loan spell at Bramall Lane been a hit or miss?

The Bangladeshi international has been on loan at Sheffield United since January, but should The Blades sign him permanently?

Midfielder Hamza Choudhury has been on loan at Sheffield United since January, where he has featured in 16 EFL Championship matches, starting 13 of them.

The Bangladeshi international also made his debut for his nation just last month, after an impressive few months at The Blades. His first game for Bangladesh ended in a 0-0 draw against India.

The 27-year-old has played 90 minutes on eight different occasions for his loan side showing how pivotal he has been since joining from last season’s Championship title winners Leicester City.

Recently, the FA Cup winner has found himself playing in a different position, which is right-back. Harry Clarke picked up an injury during Sheffield United’s 3-1 loss against Leeds United, which prompted Chris Wilder to play Choudhury at full-back.

Since then, the loanee has found himself playing between midfield and right-back, helping to strengthen the promotion-chasing outfit both in defence and in midfield.

Valued at £4m, the transfer fee could be worth paying for The Blades at the end of the season, as Choudhury has become one of the first names on the team sheet. His presence on the pitch and leadership characteristics have been key since he joined and he will only develop more during his time in South Yorkshire.

At the end of March, Sheffield United hosted Coventry City in the league. The Blades were victorious and in particular, so was Hamza Choudhury. His performance stood out amongst the Bramall Lane fans with him receiving plenty of plaudits for his performance.

With injuries hitting Chris Wilder’s side, Choudhury had to fill in defensively, which caught the attention of the fans. They took to X to praise the Bangladeshi’s versatility and stated that he could be the most important signing they made in January.

But, due to Leicester City’s confirmed relegation to the Championship ahead of next season, some of The Foxes’ fans would like to see the midfielder remain at The King Power Stadium, due to his impressive second half of the season in the second tier.

While Choudhury did not get many appearances in the first-half of the season, his campaign has been rejuvenated following his loan spell away from the Premier League club.

If the midfielder settles in South Yorkshire, a deal permanently could be on the cards. Vini Souza, Sydie Peck, Gustavo Hamer and Hamza Choudhury all fight amongst each other for those midfielder spots at the club, with Choudhury being one of those regular starters amongst the players.

The Championship winner featured 34 times in the league last season for Leicester City during their push for promotion, which was successful. Ahead of next season, The Foxes could look to maintain the midfielder due to his track record of being great in the Championship.

However, the 27-year-old may feel that he is good enough to make the step up to the Premier League and become a starter for somebody in the top division. In his last two seasons, he has played for two promotion-pushing sides and he has impacted the teams effectively and successfully. With him impressing in both campaigns, it feels like he deserves a shot at the Premier League and he is only going to get better. With an international call-up completed and with no doubt more coming up, Choudhury is certainly a player to watch in the summer and a player that Sheffield United should be looking to keep.
