Jay Sean to headline historic 35th Middlesbrough Mela in exclusive UK performance

Chart sensation. Global trailblazer. And now, Middlesbrough Mela headliner.
British-Asian superstar Jay Sean has been announced as the headline act for this summer’s 35th anniversary Middlesbrough Mela – in what promises to be one of the biggest shows in the festival’s history.

In a major first, the award-winning singer will take to the stage for a special evening concert on Saturday 16 August – the Mela’s first-ever ticketed night-time extravaganza. Hosted in Middlesbrough’s iconic Albert Park, the event will transform the festival site into a full-scale concert arena, complete with DJs, surprise guest appearances, and an electric atmosphere under the stars.

The announcement marks a landmark moment as the Mela celebrates 35 years of championing diversity, culture and community. With more than 50,000 visitors expected across the weekend, organisers are calling it the “jewel in the crown” of this year’s two-day celebration, which runs from Saturday 16 to Sunday 17 August.

Speaking on the booking, Middlesbrough Mela Director Kash Patel said:

“We’re beyond excited to welcome Jay Sean to perform at our 35th Middlesbrough Mela.
As one of the most influential British Asian artists of our time, Jay Sean’s global success and iconic sound have inspired generations.

“His appearance marks a major moment not just for the Mela, but for the wider North East. He brings an energy that reflects the vibrant diversity at the heart of our town.”

Known for smash hits like Down, Ride It and Eyes on You, Jay Sean is a global icon who made history as the first South Asian artist to top the US Billboard Hot 100, and the first British Asian artist with simultaneous Top 10 hits in America. His 2024 launch of 3AM Entertainment, a label supporting South Asian diaspora talent, further cemented his commitment to global cultural representation.

The Saturday night concert – which runs from 6pm until late – will be hosted by presenters from the BBC Asian Network, with more big names and surprise acts expected to be revealed.

A limited wave of discounted tickets is now on release exclusively for Tees Valley residents at just £15 (+ booking fee) via the Middlesbrough Mela website and Skiddle, before general sale opens.

VIP Golden Circle packages are also available, offering close-up access, fast-track entry, VIP bar and toilets, complimentary street food and a free fairground ride.

Beyond the headline concert, Middlesbrough Mela 2025 promises a weekend full of live music, dance, street food, cultural showcases, family activities, and a buzzing bazaar – remaining free and family-friendly during the daytime.

Now in its 35th year, the Mela is one of the UK’s longest-running multicultural festivals, and continues to be a beacon of celebration, heritage and pride for communities across the North. Organisers are inviting local businesses, artists and volunteers to be part of this milestone year through stalls, advertising opportunities, or volunteering roles.
