Bradford-born brand Heera Foods brought the heat and the crunch to Morrisons headquarters on Tuesday, as the supermarket’s CEO, Rami Baitiéh, took part in their lively Gol Gappay Challenge to mark South Asian Heritage Month.
The event, hosted in the buzzing atrium at Morrisons’ Bradford base, saw Heera Foods serve up their famous Gol Gappay, crispy, hollow puris filled with a spiced chickpea mix and dipped in tangy, flavoured water, to staff and visitors.
Crowds gathered for the highlight of the day: the 60-second Gol Gappay eating contest, where guests competed to see who could eat the most before the clock ran out. To the delight of the audience, Rami Baitiéh stepped up to the challenge, managing four Gol Gappay in a minute.
Heera Foods Senior Commercial Manager, Noor Ali, said:
“It was fantastic to see the CEO of one of the UK’s biggest supermarkets join in with such enthusiasm. Gol Gappay also known as paani puri are all about fun, flavour and bringing people together and Rami certainly embraced that spirit. We’re proud to share this piece of South Asian street food culture with everyone, especially right here in our home city of Bradford.”
The open day was part of Morrisons’ South Asian Heritage Month celebrations, which invited local brands to showcase food and culture from the subcontinent. For Heera Foods, it was an opportunity to put one of South Asia’s most loved snacks centre stage and to show that even a supermarket CEO can’t resist the challenge.
