New disruption warning for Huddersfield as town centre road closures loom

The closures come as Huddersfield Railway Station closes for 30-days

Huddersfield residents and rail passengers are being warned of upcoming disruption as new details have been released about the month long station closure.

As the multi-billion-pound Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) continues on, Huddersfield Railway Station is undergoing a big transformation in less than two weeks time, with a 30-day full station closure taking place from Saturday, 30 August to Sunday, 28 September, 2025.

At this time, there will be no train services through Huddersfield station. The railway will also be closed between Berry Brow, Stalybridge and Heaton Lodge Junction, affecting train services to and from Manchester, Leeds, Sheffield, and York.

Now, it has emerged that there will be several road closures in place to facilitate the work at the following dates and times:

A641 Bradford Road / Northgate:

  • Closed from 6am Sunday, 31 August to 5pm Friday, 5 September 2025
  • Closed from 6am Monday, 8 September to 6am Friday, 19 September 2025
  • Closed from 6am Monday, 22 September to 5pm Friday, 26 September 2025

John William Street:

  • Section under the bridge closed from 10pm Friday, 22 August to 5am Monday, 6 October 2025
  • Also open in a single lane from Viaduct Street to George Hotel during this period

Viaduct Street:

  • Open in a single lane from 10pm Friday, August 22 to 5am Monday, 6 October 2025.

Castlegate Loop:

  • Slip road shut from 10pm Friday, 29 August to midnight Friday, 19 September 2025 with two-way traffic lights in place on Fitzwilliam Street.

Labour MP for Huddersfield, Harpreet Uppal, said on social media: “I would encourage everyone planning to travel whilst the station is closed to plan ahead and check before they travel. I know this will cause some disruption but the work at the train station is part of the biggest rail infrastructure project in the country.

“Once the TransPennine route upgrade is complete, it will mean faster, more reliable services, better connections, and a station that’s fit for the future- helping Huddersfield thrive and making it easier for residents, visitors, and businesses to travel across the North. Even so, I have asked the TRU team to ensure the changes are communicated effectively and that engagement continues with local residents, businesses and stakeholders.”

Passengers will be kept on the move via diversionary routes or rail replacement buses and are strongly advised to plan their journey ahead of time via nationalrail.co.uk or their train operator website.

Huddersfield station will reopen on Monday, 29 September in an interim state, with only platforms one, two and three in use, while the remaining work continues. The station upgrade is set to be complete in early 2027.
