Fifteen sites in Huddersfield are among England’s most “at risk”, according to Historic England

The sites are featured on the Heritage at Risk Register, which highlights the places across England that are most at risk of being lost as a result of “neglect, decay, or inappropriate development”, and have the greatest need of safeguarding for the future.

The register is updated every year and covers: buildings and structures; places of worship; archaeology entries; registered parks and gardens; registered battlefields; protected wreck sites; and conservation areas.

Currently, 15 of the register’s listings are in Huddersfield, with these made up of two conservation areas, a mill, seven churches and the former Huddersfield Infirmary. In the case of the Huddersfield Town Centre Conservation Area, which covers almost all of the town centre within the ring road, its condition is described as “very bad” but “improving”.

The former infirmary just off the ring road is considered to be in “poor condition” and a state of “slow decay”. Birkby Conservation Area also made the list, with this in “very bad” condition and “deteriorating”.

Five of the listings relate to different parts of Westwood Mills at Linthwaite which we have listed as one below:

Church of St Thomas, Manchester Road, Longroyd Bridge

Church of St Stephen, Lidget Street, Lindley

Church of St John, St John’s Road, Birkby

Church of St Mark, St Mark’s Road, Longwood

Church of the Holy Trinity, Trinity Street, Huddersfield

Christ Church, Woodhouse Hill, Woodhouse

Westwood Mills, Lowestwood Lane, Linthwaite

Church of Emmanuel, Huddersfield Road, Kirkburton

Former Huddersfield Infirmary
