Newcastle councillor Thom Campion charged with sexual assault

A Newcastle councillor has been charged with sexual assault.

Thom Campion, a sitting councillor in the city’s Castle ward, is scheduled to appear at Newcastle Magistrates’ Court next Wednesday, 3 September.

The 27-year-old, of Warkworth Woods in the Newcastle Great Park, has been charged with one count of sexual assault on a female. The charge relates to an alleged offence during March 2023 in Newcastle.

Cllr Campion has been a member of the council since 2021, when he won a by-election called following the death of former Newcastle Lib Dem leader Anita Lower.

Originally elected as a Liberal Democrat, he was “suspended without prejudice” by the party last year pending an investigation into a complaint made against him. He continues to sit as an independent.

Cllr Campion stood as a Parliamentary candidate for Cramlington and Killingworth at the 2024 general election and previously for the Blyth Valley constituency in 2019, under the name Thom Chapman.
