In a momentous event, Air India, India’s premier global airline, unveiled its eagerly awaited collection of brand-new uniforms designed by India’s iconic couturier, Manish Malhotra. This revelation marks the dawning of a new era in inflight fashion, where the essence of rich Indian heritage harmoniously meets 21st-century style, elegance, and comfort.
Crafted in the heart of Mumbai at Malhotra’s atelier, the uniforms showcase a captivating array of colours and timeless designs, reflecting a rare fusion of tradition and modernity. The collection is set to roll out gradually over the next few months, premiering with the entry of Air India’s first Airbus A350.
Campbell Wilson, Air India’s CEO and Managing Director, expressed excitement about the innovative ensemble, stating, “Manish Malhotra’s designs will script an exciting new chapter for Air India, perfectly capturing our new identity, service principles, and our pursuit of setting new benchmarks in global aviation.”
Aligned with Air India’s recent global rebranding as the emblem of a confident, progressive, and resurgent India, the female cabin crew uniforms epitomize a perfect blend of tradition and modernity. Featuring ready-to-wear ombrĂ© sarees with intricate patterns reminiscent of Indian heritage architecture, the attire presents a unique East-meets-West look. Senior cabin crew don aubergine-to-burgundy sarees, exuding authority and sophistication, while junior crew members embrace vibrant red-to-purple ombrĂ© sarees, embodying youthfulness and energy.
Manish Malhotra expressed his honour in designing for Air India, aiming to capture the essence of India’s diverse culture and traditions while embodying a modern and sophisticated look. The hallmark technique of ombrĂ©s, a Malhotra signature, reflects his deep-rooted fondness for traditional attire and gradients, with a colour palette paying homage to India’s rich cultural heritage.
The uniforms, designed in consultation with Air India’s cabin crew representatives and In-flight Services team, ensure practicality and ease of movement during in-flight duties. The cockpit crew sports a classic black double-breasted suit with a Vista-inspired print, symbolizing professionalism and timelessness.
Footwear designed by Malhotra blends style and comfort, with the female cabin crew donning dual-tone block heels, and the male cabin crew opting for comfortable black Brogues. The uniforms also feature pearl earrings and sling bags for female cabin crew.
Speaking about the spotlight Air India has been in globally, Campbell Wilson expressed confidence that the new uniforms will distinctly define the airline, making a statement that showcases the best of Indian heritage and hospitality.
Beyond the cabin and cockpit, Malhotra has meticulously crafted uniforms for ground staff, engineers, and security personnel, promising a comprehensive sartorial overhaul for Air India.
Sustainability and quality have been paramount in the design and production process, with all fabrics and garments proudly sourced and tailored in India. As Air India takes flight into this new era of elegance, these uniforms are poised to become an iconic representation of the country’s rich cultural tapestry and unwavering hospitality.
