The Asian Media Awards was held at the Hilton Manchester Deansgate on Friday 28 October, which saw more than 400 people attend a glitzy awards ceremony celebrating the Asian Media industry.
The star-studded night saw 23 award categories being announced which honoured the achievements of journalists, broadcasters, podcasters and leading figures from the industry.
Among them was our very own title Asian Standard newspaper, which won the Best Publication award 2022.
Asian Standard is part of RF Media & Publishing. As part of a restructure in 2020, due to Covid, Asian Standard became the media company’s weekly print news title, focusing on Bradford, while their Sunday paper – Asian Sunday went online. Since the restructure, Asian Standard is now available as four regional titles; Asian Standard Bradford, Asian Standard Kirklees, Asian Standard Leeds and Asian Standard North East with Asian Standard Manchester launching in 2023 and a further five titles by 2025.
Asian Standard is unique from many British Asian publications, in that it aims to platform the British South Asian community, but engaging a wider audience, who have an interest in the South Asian community.
The newspaper’s unique selling point is that it focuses on local community news, which is relatable and engaging for the audience it serves.
Founder and Managing Editor Fatima Patel said: “It is an absolute honour to win this

accolade and is testament to the hard work of my team and support from our readers and advertisers. We are one of the newest Asian print media titles in the country and it therefore is incredibly satisfying to see this recognition come our way. It’s just the right motivation for my team and I, who will continue to endeavour to bring you the best news from your local area and be the credible and critical voice representing Britain’s South Asian communities.”
Other winners of the night were Kulvinder Ghir of Goodness Gracious Me fame, who won the Sophiya Haque Services to Television & Film Award, Nihal Arthanayake for Media Personality of the Year.
