Bradford Council releases details of events planned over the weekend to mourn the passing of Her Majesty The Queen

Bradford Council on Friday, 9 September released details of the events which will be happening this weekend across the district as we mourn the passing of Her Majesty The Queen and mark the Accession of King Charles III.

In line with the official protocols the Lord Mayor of Bradford Councillor Martin Love has written a letter of condolence to offer the sympathies of the district to King Charles III.

Flags on council buildings and in parks across the district have been lowered to half-mast and in line with the national protocol they will be raised to full-mast on the morning of Saturday 10 September for the national reading of the proclamation of the new sovereign. They will then be lowered to half-mast again on Sunday 11 September. This is also in line with national protocols.

The Proclamation of Accession will be made at St James’s Palace, London on Saturday 10 September. The Proclamation will then be read at the Royal Exchange in the City of London before being read the day after in Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast.

On Sunday 11 September at 2pm the District Proclamation of Accession will be read in City Park by the Vice Lord-Lieutenant Helen Thomson, with the Lord Mayor of Bradford, the Leader of the Council and the Chief Executive in attendance.

Everyone is invited to the reading of the District Proclamation, which will be followed by a multi-faith gathering for prayers and readings in City Park.

A service of meditation and prayer will take place at Bradford Cathedral at 3.15pm on Sunday 11 September.

Books of condolence have been opened and floral tributes have been laid across the Bradford district.

The book of condolence in City Hall has been signed by the Lord Mayor of Bradford Councillor Martin Love, the Leader of Bradford Council Councillor Susan Hinchcliffe and the Chief Executive of Bradford Council Kersten England.

Books of condolence are available for people to sign between 10am and 8pm on Saturday and Sunday at:

  • Bradford City Hall
  • Bingley Area Office, Bingley Town Hall
  • Ilkley Town Hall
  • Keighley Town Hall
  • Shipley Town Hall

An online book of condolence has been opened by Bradford Council and can be viewed and sign at https://www.bradford.gov.uk/book-of-condolence/

The bells of City Hall, Bradford Cathedral and churches across the district tolled for an hour today from 12noon to mourn the passing of The Queen.

The bells will ring again at 12noon on Saturday to celebrate the Accession of King Charles III.

City Hall clock tower and buildings in the city centre will be lit in the official mourning colour of purple.
