The A Team, alongside distinguished guests, celebrated the conferment of an Honorary Doctorate by the University of Bradford to Nirmal Singh MBE FRSA on Saturday 7 September 2024, at De Baga Restaurant, Leeds. This prestigious accolade is a testament to Dr Singh’s extraordinary journey and his remarkable contributions to the Bradford community and beyond.
From humble beginnings on his family’s farm in Punjab, Dr Nirmal Singh embarked on a life-changing journey to the UK at the age of 15 in 1967. What began as a temporary departure grew into over five decades of unwavering dedication and entrepreneurial success, starting with textiles and culminating in the establishment of a thriving property empire. His entrepreneurial vision has played a pivotal role in transforming Bradford, breathing new life into the city through the regeneration of disused iconic mills, creating jobs, and fostering a culture of entrepreneurship.
Dr Nirmal’s influence extends far beyond his business endeavours. Since being appointed a Member of the British Empire (MBE) in 1999, he has become a pillar of the community, working to bridge cultures, faiths, and communities in Bradford.
His role as Chairman of the Yorkshire Sikh Forum and his generous support of numerous charitable causes, including the MRI scanner appeal at Bradford Royal Infirmary, highlight his commitment to service and philanthropy.
Equally commendable is his long standing relationship with the University of Bradford. From celebrating cultural diversity at events like Indian Independence Day and Holi festivals to his compassionate support for students during the COVID-19 pandemic—providing meal parcels, emergency accommodation, and other vital resources— Dr Nirmal has been a constant advocate for the University’s students, particularly international students.
His dedication to fostering an inclusive community and maintaining relationships with local temples and Gurudwaras has profoundly enriched the student experience. Dr Singh’s journey from modest beginnings to becoming a cornerstone of the Bradford community stands as an inspiring testament to tenacity, generosity, and a commitment to giving back.
