A new reading adventure is coming to Bradford Libraries this month.
The Secret Book Quest is a fun and free year-round reading challenge for ages 5-12, designed to inspire a lifelong love of reading.
Led by a vivid cast of beautifully illustrated characters, children can read their way through 10 themed zones including space, animals, and imagination. Collecting stickers as they go, they read 50 books to complete the challenge and decipher a secret code. Finishers will also receive a certificate and a special prize!
To launch The Secret Book Quest, there will be special events happening on Saturday, 12 October at the following libraries – Bingley, Eccleshill, Ilkley, Keighley, Laisterdyke, Manningham, Shipley, Wibsey and Wyke. Join them for special story sessions and scavenger hunts. Contact your local library for timings.
At 11am on Saturday, 12 October, City Library will be joined by writer, storyteller and poet Conrad Burdekin, who will be providing fun storytelling, a scavenger hunt and creative writing session. This is a free event for 5-12 year olds. Contact City Library to book your place.
Cllr Sarah Ferriby, Bradford Council’s Executive Member for Healthy People and Places, said: “We’re really excited to launch The Secret Book Quest in Bradford Libraries. The challenge will be a great addition to our offer for children in the district and will help us to get more children reading and enjoying books. We know from the success of the Summer Reading Challenge that children in Bradford enjoy these challenges and now they can continue their reading adventures year-round.”
Every child who signs up to the Secret Book Quest will receive a special booklet packed full of puzzles, fun facts and activities, along with their first sticker. There are 10 themed ‘zones’ for children to travel through including animals, underwater, space and technology. To complete the Quest, they must read five books for each zone and collect all the code-stickers along the way – a total of 50 books. The final sticker is the missing piece that enables them to decipher a secret code and complete the challenge!
And the fun doesn’t have to stop there – keen readers can continue their reading journey with continuation sheets and find more recommendations, challenges and activities in their local library. There is no rush to complete the challenge, and any type of book counts – poetry, fiction, comic books and more. Children can complete at their own pace, reading books they love.
Library staff are on hand to support the children, helping them to discover new authors and explore a wide range of different types of books and ways of reading. The library is completely free to join – so any children who are not already members can be signed up at the same time as joining The Secret Book Quest.
