The British Asian Rugby Association (BARA) announced the inaugural British Asian Rugby Awards, set for 4 November, from 6-8 pm in Speaker’s House within the Palace of Westminster.
The awards ceremony will honour the achievements of British South Asians in rugby league and union, highlighting their contributions, fostering inclusivity, and driving positive change. It will celebrate those who have made a profound impact on sport and the wider community.
“The British Asian Rugby Awards are a landmark moment to recognise the success of South Asians who have inspired others, transformed perceptions, and impacted their communities,” said BARA founder Dr Ikram Butt. “Hosting the event in Parliament underscores its importance and the growing recognition of representation.”
“BARA has always sought to use rugby as a medium for social change and cultural understanding, fostering community cohesion. At a time when society faces challenges like race riots and Islamophobia, sports can unite people, break down prejudices, and promote a sense of belonging.”
The British Asian Rugby Awards are envisioned as an annual celebration that fosters discussions on how sports can unify communities, offering a counter-narrative to discrimination and highlighting diversity and inclusion in rugby.
This invitation-only event will welcome key figures from the world of politics, rugby, business, media and community leadership, creating a space for dialogue on how sports can promote unity and inclusivity.
Sir Lindsay Hoyle, Speaker of the House, commented: “It is a privilege to host the British Asian Rugby Awards in Speaker’s House.
“This event is a testament to the growing representation and success of British South Asians in rugby. Such an initiative celebrates athletic achievement and highlights the power of sport in fostering unity, respect, and diversity in our society. I commend BARA for their dedication to inclusivity in rugby and am honoured to support their efforts.”
Phil Davies, former Welsh captain & International coach and current Director of Rugby at World Rugby added: “As rugby continues to grow globally, it is inspiring to see initiatives like the British Asian Rugby Awards celebrating the contributions of diverse communities to the sport.
“Rugby’s power to unite and inspire is evident in events like this, fostering representation and inclusivity. The sport’s spirit is about coming together, breaking down barriers, and creating opportunities for all, driving positive change on and off the field.”
Rt Hon Lord Addington, vice president of the UK Sports Association and captain of the Commons & Lords RFU Team, remarked: “It is wonderful to see the British Asian Rugby Awards highlighting the achievements of British South Asians in rugby.
“Rugby’s essence lies in its ability to bridge communities and promote understanding through teamwork and shared passion. I look forward to being part of this significant event that reflects the unifying power of the sport.”
