Celebrating a Milestone: The first anniversary of female duo’s Legal Llynk

Young law professionals Rukhsar Jahangir and Maryam Razzaq have every reason to celebrate. Their community organisation, Legal Lynk, has reached its first anniversary—a significant milestone reflecting their commitment and passion. Established with the vision of creating a supportive network for South Asian women lawyers, Legal Lynk has already made a notable impact.

Reflecting on the journey, Maryam shares, “When I began my career in law, networks like this did not exist. I remember feeling isolated and often overwhelmed by the challenges that seemed unique to me as a South Asian woman. Navigating the legal landscape was daunting, and without a support system that understood my cultural background and the specific hurdles I faced, it often felt like I was navigating uncharted territory alone.”

South Asian women in law face distinct challenges, from cultural barriers and balancing familial responsibilities to underrepresentation in leadership roles and encountering bias and discrimination. Achieving a work-life balance, given cultural obligations and expectations, adds another layer of complexity. These challenges underscore the importance of networks like Legal Lynk.

Rukhsar emphasises, “Networks provide a much-needed support system. They offer a space where we can share our experiences, seek advice, and find solace in knowing we are not alone in our struggles. This collective support is empowering and can make a significant difference in our careers.”

One of the critical elements of Legal Lynk is mentorship. Access to mentors who have navigated similar paths and understand specific challenges is invaluable. Mentors provide guidance, share their experiences, and help avoid common pitfalls, accelerating career growth.

Visibility and representation are also crucial. Legal Lynk works towards increasing the visibility of South Asian women in law, highlighting their contributions and ensuring their voices are heard. This helps break stereotypes and inspires the next generation to pursue careers in law.

Moreover, Legal Lynk advocates for policy changes and initiatives that benefit minority women. They are a collective voice pushing for equality and representation within the legal sector, driving change toward a more inclusive and equitable profession.

One of the most beautiful aspects of networks like Legal Lynk is how they foster a culture of celebrating each other’s successes. Rukhsar notes, “We succeed when we support and lift each other. By recognising and celebrating our achievements, we boost each other’s morale and create a positive, empowering environment. Success stories within our network serve as a source of inspiration and motivation, showing us what is possible and encouraging us to strive for our own goals.”

The support for Legal Lynk extends beyond its members. Fasar Mahmood of Fraser Masood Solicitors and Sarah Khan Bashir of SKB Law, sponsors of the first anniversary celebration, emphasize the importance of such networks. Fasar states, “When we support each other, we create opportunities for growth and build a stronger community. Our individual successes contribute to the success of our entire community.”

Sarah Khan Bashir adds, “Networks like Legal Llynk are not just important; they are essential. They provide the support, mentorship, visibility, and advocacy that South Asian women in law need to thrive. By supporting and lifting each other, we create a more inclusive, equitable, and successful legal community.”

As Legal Lynk looks to the future, Rukhsar and Maryam are excited about what lies ahead. They plan to expand their reach, offer more resources, and continue advocating for the needs of South Asian women in the legal profession. Their vision is clear: a thriving, supportive community where South Asian women lawyers can achieve their full potential.

“We wish both Maryam and Rukhsar, and all members of Legal Lynk, much luck for the future,” says Fasar. “We look forward to seeing what they have planned for the next year and beyond.”

Legal Lynk’s first anniversary is not just a celebration of the past year’s achievements but a beacon of hope and inspiration for future generations of South Asian women in law. Together, they are making a significant impact and paving the way for a more inclusive and equitable legal community.
