In a letter to the local Conservative MPs – and Liz Truss backers – Mark Eastwood and Jason McCartney – the Kirklees Labour Leader, says: “the damage of Liz Truss’ government should not be rewarded with life peerages, knighthoods and MBEs for her cronies.

“The Prime Minster has the power to block Truss’ honours list. I am asking you to publicly support this.

“I appreciate that this may be difficult for you, given your support for Liz Truss and for the disastrous mini-budget at the time, but the damage that this caused to the country – and to people in Kirklees – should, by now, be abundantly clear.

“I hope you will agree with me that it would be entirely inappropriate to honour the people who, in just 49 days, crashed the economy, left millions to pay more for their mortgages and worsened a cost-of-living crisis that we are still facing.”

Truss, who left office in October amid controversy, faced criticism for a budget that included £45 billion in unfunded tax cuts, which contributed to an economic crisis.

Asian Standard reached out to Jason McCartney, who slammed the Kirklees Council leader for the financial crisis faced by the Council.

“MPs have no power to block Honours as Cathy Scott knows, there is no vote. It is pointless party-political games when the council needs to concentrate on the mess that has taken them to the brink of bankruptcy. Protecting jobs and services should be at the forefront of their thoughts, but it sadly seems not,” he said.

Writing back to Cllr Cathy Scott, he states: “I am astounded but sadly not surprised that given the perilous state of the council that yourself and your deputy are spending your time indulging in cheap political point scoring.”

Ms. Truss has nominated four individuals for life peerages, although reports from The Times suggest that two have declined the offer, with one individual characterizing it as “humiliating.”

There have been widespread reports that Liz Truss has submitted up to 14 individuals for resignation honours.
