In a groundbreaking move, University of Bradford Chancellor and acclaimed TV/radio personality, Anita Rani, has unveiled the Rani Scholarship—an empowering initiative aimed at offering financial support and a lifeline to women from disadvantaged backgrounds. This visionary scholarship not only provides a 50% fee waiver but also includes an annual living cost bursary, with the first scholarships set to be awarded in the upcoming 2024/25 academic year.
Changing Lives, One Scholarship at a Time
Anita Rani, known for her role as the university’s seventh chancellor since March 2023, is set to make a lasting impact with the Rani Scholarship. The initiative stems from her fervent belief in the transformative power of higher education, drawing inspiration from her personal journey and passion for empowering women.
“Instilling Confidence and Opening Doors”: Anita Rani’s Vision for the Rani Scholarship
Speaking about the scholarship, Anita Rani emphasised the life-altering impact of a university education, stating, “Going to university completely changes your life, it opens your world up not only through education but the culture and people you get to meet – this is about instilling the next generation with confidence to step into the world.
“One of the things I wanted to do was to support women to gain access to a higher education. This has been a passion of mine forever, so the fact that we will be able to fulfil it is incredible.
“University isn’t just about acquiring knowledge; it’s about finding your own voice, cultivating your passions, and gaining the confidence to forge a new path.”
The Bradford ambassador adds that The Rani Scholarship aims to provide women facing significant challenges with the opportunity to pursue higher education and realise their dreams.
A Personal Commitment to Change

Anita Rani’s commitment to supporting women in higher education is deeply personal. She recognises the broader implications of education on shaping the trajectory of women’s lives and aims to address the challenges faced by those who are underrepresented in certain subjects and industries.
Shirley Congdon, Vice-Chancellor’s Perspective
University of Bradford Vice-Chancellor Professor Shirley Congdon emphasised the importance of providing support to students who may not have the traditional backing, saying, “Not every student arrives at university with the support they need to thrive.” She praised Anita’s commitment to empowering women, noting that access to education not only transforms the lives of the recipients but also has a lasting impact on future generations.
A Legacy of Change
Anita Rani joins the distinguished line of University of Bradford Chancellors and continues the tradition of leadership in fostering positive change. The Rani Scholarship is poised to support four female students annually, ensuring they not only overcome challenges but also thrive in subjects and industries where they are most underrepresented.
As the Rani Scholarship takes flight, it becomes a symbol of hope, empowerment, and the enduring belief that education can be a catalyst for positive transformation. Anita Rani’s visionary scholarship is set to leave an indelible mark on the lives of the women it supports, creating a legacy of change for generations to come.
