Bakery and butchers at Huddersfield supermarket ordered to close over ‘imminent risk to health’

Correction: Our initial report stated that the supermarket had been ordered to close, reflecting Kirklees Council’s official comment. The council has since clarified that the closure applies only to the bakery and butchers within the store. This article has been updated accordingly.

Kirklees Council has ordered the bakery and butchers at a Huddersfield supermarket to close amid an “imminent risk to health”.

The affected sections of Umrah Supermarket, at 10 Trinity Street in the town centre, were ordered to shut following a routine food hygiene inspection on 9 October 2026, the council confirmed.

When the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) visited on 12 October, the supermarket’s doors were open and a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Notice was displayed at the main entrance.

The notice in Umrah Supermarket, Huddersfield

The notice, dated 9 October and signed by food hygiene inspector Amy Anderson, identifies an “imminent risk to health” in relation to the bakery and butchers. It cites a cockroach infestation posing a risk of contamination to food and equipment.

It states: “YOU MUST NOT USE IT FOR THE PURPOSES OF THIS OR ANY SIMILAR FOOD BUSINESS.”

In its original statement, a Kirklees Council spokesperson said: “Following a routine food hygiene inspection of Umrah Supermarket in Huddersfield, officers found evidence of a pest infestation and have ordered the supermarket to close.”

The council has since clarified that the order applies only to the bakery and butchers, rather than the whole supermarket.

The spokesperson also said: “Before the premises can reopen, the business owner must appoint a professional pest control service, undertake a deep clean of the premises, and address any structural issues that may be contributing to the infestation.

“Officers will continue to work with the business owner and advise them through the process to make sure the supermarket is safe for the public before reopening.”

The LDRS has attempted to contact Umrah Supermarket for comment.
