Hundreds of Kirkheaton residents have come together to save their village from the “scourge” of fly-tipping.
A petition calling for CCTV to be rolled out at the village entrance has been launched and now has over 200 signatures. Residents want the cameras to be in place as both a preventative measure and a means of tracing the perpetrators.
The problem is said to have been exacerbated by the closure of Dalton Bank Road following a large landslip in January. Kirklees Council has more recently confirmed that the road is expected to remain closed until Spring 2025.
Alison Lewis, who created the petition on Change.org, wrote: “The entrance to our beloved village has been marred by a persistent issue – fly-tipping. This issue has only worsened with the closure of Dalton Bank Road, bringing more traffic and increasing our beautiful village’s litter problem.
“The primary contributor to this disturbing issue is the local layby bottle bank and bin area. They have become magnets for fly-tipping, jeopardising the aesthetics of our village entrance, and more importantly, the environment.”
One supporter commented: “Fly-tipping is disgusting and is ruining our beautiful village.” Another wrote: “It is unsightly, a vermin magnet and a health hazard.”
The matter of fly-tipping elsewhere in the borough has been raised recently, with the closure of Birstall’s tip at Nab Lane. This left elected members from across the political spectrum concerned that fly-tipping would increase on Kirklees’ streets.
