India cricket players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have been named as the two top batsmen in the world after the International Cricket Council (ICC) released the latest player rankings yesterday.
India captain Virat Kohli remains top of the charts with 871 points while his teammate Sharma is number two with 855 points.
The duo have not played a competitive match since the Coronavirus outbreak but still remain the two top batsmen in world cricket. India’s last ODI fixtures were against New Zealand in February, a series which they lost 2-1.
The ICC rank all cricket players on their recent performances using an algorithm based on how they perform in recent matches, their ranking is based out of 1000.
Pakistan batsman Babar Azam, who captained his country in the recent T20 fixtures against England this summer, made number three in the list, amassing 829 points.
England’s Jonny Bairstow also made the top 10 after scoring 112 against Australia in the final ODI match at Old Trafford earlier this week. The England opener scored 196 runs across all three ODI matches against Australia in September.
Australian stars Glenn Maxwell and Alex Carey, who led their side to victory over England with an ODI record-breaking partnership of 212 on Tuesday, both rose up the charts on the back of their performances against England. Maxwell and Carey both occupy 26th place with Maxwell jumping five places and Carey improving by 11 places.
Kohli and Sharma will have the opportunity to cement their places at the top of the ODI batsmen rankings this winter as India travel to Australia. They will face Australia in a four-match test series before taking part in a three-match ODI series throughout December and January.
However, with no fixtures scheduled for the winter months, the likes of Babar Azam and Jonny Bairstow will have to wait for their chance to climb further up the rankings.
