It is “too early” to announce potential sites for a new city centre bus station, Councillors have been told

IT is “too early” to publicly announce potential sites for a future city centre bus station – Councillors have been told.

Bradford Interchange is due to re-open on January 5 – a year after it was closed for safety reasons.

But the structural engineers report that found it was safe to re-open also highlighted the age of the 1970s building – and that it was reaching the end of its 50 year life span.

It suggested a new station be built in the city centre in the coming years, incorporating stops for the planned tram line between Bradford and Leeds.

West Yorkshire Combined Authority, which runs the Interchange, has previously said the search for a new site for this station was in its early stages.

At the final meeting of Bradford Council of 2024, Councillor Alex Mitchell (Lab, Queensbury) asked Council bosses which sites were being looked for the new station.

A response from the Executive said: “The work to identify an alternative location for a replacement bus station in Bradford city centre is being undertaken by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority.

“Presently, WYCA are procuring work on a study to assess potential sites and therefore it is too early to provide a list of potential locations, although any such list may likely be subject to commercial sensitivity if it includes privately owned sites that would require purchasing.”
