Leeds City Council grants £396,000 to support St George’s Crypt emergency beds for rough sleepers

Council funding of up to £396,000 will help a charity continue to provide emergency beds for rough sleepers.

St George’s Crypt runs a 24-bed service where people are provided with food and help with mental health and substance misuse problems.

Leeds City Council decided to continue funding the scheme, which helps people move into longer-term accommodation.

A council report said: “The provider is a well-established provider of supported emergency accommodation across different sites.

“The service provides good outcomes for clients and is a key part of the pathway in Leeds for supporting people rough sleeping into accommodation.”

The report said £192,000 grant would help keep the temporary  accommodation open over the next 12 months.

A separate contract worth up to £204,000 will see a private security firm continue to help keep people safe in the service.

The report said GCA Securities and Facilities Management was already working with different services provided by St George’s Crypt.

People living in the service had complex needs and a history of homelessness and rough sleeping, the report said.

It said: “The environment can become challenging, requiring interventions by staff and security to ensure the service remains a safe environment.

“Without this continued security provision, the service would not be viable in managing ongoing risk issues.”

The report said GCA previously provided security for temporary hotel accommodation during Covid-19 lock-downs. It added: “GCA offer value for money. ”

Cash to support the project would be allocated from the council’s Rough Sleeping Initiative (RSI) funding.

The report said: “The provider and GCA are aware of the short-term nature of the funding and the proposals in this report can be scaled up or scaled down depending on future funding allocations.”
