Leeds Council faces opposition to curb on winter fuel allowance

The council will be urged to oppose government plans to limit pensioners’ winter fuel payments.

Leeds City councillors will debate the issue after a restriction on the payments was announced by the Labour government.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves, the Leeds West and Pudsey MP, said people not on pension credit or other means would no longer get the payments of up to ÂŁ300.

Alan Lamb, leader of the Leeds Conservative group, has urged opposition to the move in a motion to the next full council meeting.

The motion said: “This council believes the pensioners’ winter fuel allowance is an invaluable lifeline to thousands of older people in Leeds at risk of not being able to heat their homes.

“Council therefore opposes the proposal to scrap this vital pensioner benefit and calls on the government to honour the pre-election promise made by the Chancellor of the Exchequer to fully fund the winter fuel allowance.”

Councillors on the Labour-controlled authority will be asked to vote on the motion at the meeting on Wednesday 11 September.

Pensioners are being encouraged to make sure they have applied for all the benefits they are entitled to following the winter fuel allowance move.

A Leeds City Council spokesperson said: “We are working with partners to signpost the local support available to older people across Leeds and encouraging eligible pensioners to make a Pension Credit claim.

“Free, confidential and impartial help and advice is available on a range of money related matters such as energy, fuel, food and benefits through the council’s Money Information Centre.”
