Lord Mayor’s Cultural Ball set to enthral audiences with a spectacular showcase of dance, music, singing and magic.

Every year the Lord Mayor of Bradford makes a commitment to raise funds for charity.

Manningham Councillor Shabir Hussain took on the chains of office at the Alhambra Theatre in May last year, where he committed to raise funds for Marie Curie Hospice and Bradford Community Kitchen.

Marie Curie is best known for helping those with cancer. Cllr Hussain said he had lost family and friends to the illness, including Bingley Rural Councillor Mike Ellis, who died of cancer earlier this year.

Bradford Community Kitchen is a group of volunteers who feed the homeless across the district.

In order to raise as much funds as possible, the Lord Mayor is hosting a Cultural Ball on Friday 13 May, at the Bradford Hotel, Hall Ings.

The almost sold out event has business leaders and community figures attending where they will be entertained by singers, musicians, dancers and magicians. The aim of the event is

to fundraiser for the Lord Mayor’s causes, but also pay tribute to all the hard-working volunteers and charity workers across the district.

Event organiser Dr Manoj Joshi DL said: “The Civic Cultural Ball is our opportunity to not only raise funds for some great causes, but to also celebrate our amazing cultures, communities and businesses by bringing everyone together under one roof to celebrate what we all have in common -unity in humanity

“Lord Mayor Shabir Hussain as First Citizen despite numerous challenges is a great champion and a respected figure of Bradford, it will also be great to commend him for all the work he has done for the Bradford community”

Towards the end of March this year, the Lord Mayor of Bradford suffered a heart attack from a blood clot in one of the main arteries of his heart, resulting in surgery and a short stay in the hospital.

Not one to give up working or serving the community, the Manningham Councillor was helping his constituents from his hospital bed, dealing with a housing query from a concerned resident a mere few hours after his surgery.

With a background in the pharmaceutical industry and the restaurant sector, The Lord Mayor has served on Bradford Council since 2006 and is the Area Planning Panel chair and works on the Bradford West Area Committee and the Regulatory and Appeals Committee.

Cllr Hussain has been married to Lady Mayoress Azra Bi for over forty years, they have five sons and six grandchildren together. He was announced as the Lord Mayor and First Citizen of Bradford 2021-22 last year, entering the twelve-month role during the second lockdown.
